How the Abortion Pill Works
Medical abortion typically involves two drugs. Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone that supports the growth and continuation of a pregnancy. Without it, the uterine lining breaks down, and the pregnancy ends. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.
Abortion pill reversal focuses on the window of time after mifepristone but before misoprostol is taken.
How APR Works
APR works by supplementing the body with progesterone to counteract the effects of mifepristone. Progesterone has been used in pregnancy support for decades, particularly for women at risk of miscarriage.
Research indicates that beginning APR within 24 to 72 hours of taking mifepristone significantly improves the likelihood of continuing the pregnancy. Reported success rates range from 64% to 68%, depending on the method used.
Some women have had success outside that window, though earlier intervention is associated with better outcomes.
